Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for answering incoming telephone calls and directing callers to the relevant section or directorate within the department. The Telecom Operator will also provide members of the public with information about services offered by the Department of Basic Education.
The role will involve screening incoming calls and maintaining appropriate records. The successful applicant may also be required to provide staff members with the internal telephone directory when requested.
The Telecom Operator will provide basic secretarial support to sections when officials are unavailable and will take and convey messages when necessary. The position also involves providing members of the public with contact details for Provincial and District Offices.
The successful candidate will be expected to ensure that the department’s switchboard remains properly manned and that an effective and efficient telephone service is provided at all times.
Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of a Grade 12 / Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. Candidates should have good written and verbal communication skills, together with computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Good interpersonal and public relations skills are important for this position because the successful candidate will interact with staff members and members of the public. Applicants should also be able to work under pressure, solve problems and provide good customer service.
Knowledge or experience relating to customer service and document management will also be beneficial for the role.
